Distance Measurement
Solutions
a) To capture the resistance of sensors based on potentiometers, we offer a wide range of measuring amplifiers. Most suitable is for example the MA-UNI and in the series of miniature measuring amplifiers it is the MAL-RK1 and MAL-SG.They both match the measuring systems of BMC Messsysteme GmbH perfectly.
b) The measuring amplifier MA-UNI is ideal for connecting to a big variety of LVDT-sensors.
c) USB-OI16 and LAN-AD16fx enable the direct connection to up to three incremental rotary encoders.
To get the perfectly customized measuring system, we from BMC Messsysteme GmbH are more then happy to help and advise you any time.
With the miniature measurement amplifiers of the MAL-Series it is very easy to connect your sensors to the measurement systems of BMC Messsysteme GmbH. With our 5B compatible measurement amplifiers these signals can even be galvanically isolated from the measurement system.

Distance measurement in physical measurement technology collects values in the range of µ-meters up to kilometers. It is usually a static signal, respectively a slow change of the path. The resolution of the distance sensors is highly depending on the used measuring principle (sensor).
a) Sensors based on potentiometers do have a wiper on the resisitance that has got a constant voltage applied. They directly deliver a output voltage that is linearly depending in the angle. The disadvantage is the wearout through the friction of the wiper. They ususally apply in the range of 1 ... 50mm. Measurements with strain gauges change the electrical resistance by lenght- and cross-section-changes in the range of just a few µ-meters.
b) Using a inductive sensor, the induction of the choke changes. There are two options of measuring: for one the metal object is moved without being touched or it is moved through a probe in a metal core within in the choke. The torsional variable differential transformer has got a movable core that influences the coupling factor by two secondary chokes. The cross anchor detector changes the air gap of a magnetic circuit. The magneto-inductive distance sensor measures the distance of a magnetic field even behind a non-magnetic separating wall. The eddy current sensor can measure non-magnetic, but electricity conducting materials without touching.
c) The incremental rotary encoder has got a periodic measuring standard (line on glas, metal, magnetising on magnetic tape). The sensor head is lead passed it and puts out signals, that are being counted forwards and backwards in the evaluation electrics. It just measures the difference to the position after switching on. Absolute encoders do have multiple tracks and instantly show the absolute position.
